Spring into Colour

With every new bright green shoot and buttery yellow narcissi popping up around us, we see springtime hailing the return of colour to the natural world. And so, what better time to turn our attention to how we are using colour in our homes than now?

We all have certain colours we are naturally drawn to and often an instinctive sense of how much colour we like to use in our homes; but one of the things I’m asked to do most frequently as an interior designer, is help people to introduce more colour to their homes – whether in bold quantities or with subtle touches.

Colour is something that people can be nervous of; we all know the power that certain colours can have over our mood and wellbeing and that can make people reticent about committing to a bold statement colour in their homes.

But, if you’re feeling inspired by the change of season to bring a little more colour into your home, here are my suggestions of where to start.

“We all know the power that certain colours

have over our mood and wellbeing.”

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Ask yourself this question

The main question to consider is how permanent you want the colours you are introducing to be – is this a longer-term commitment that calls for a wallcovering or a piece of investment furniture? Or are you just drawn toward a splash of something to mark the changing season?

Making a big change

If it’s the former, choose a colour that you love, but then you need to carefully select a shade of that colour that will sit comfortably in your home all year round. You’ll need to pay particular attention to the amount and quality of light that comes into the space you are considering and ask yourself these questions:

-       How will the colour transition from daylight to dark in the space?

-       How does the colour sit with the existing furnishings in the room?

-       Does it need warmth or could it take a cooler tone?

Make use of colour swatches and samples, taking care to move them around the space and take a look at them at different times of day and in different weather conditions, to see how they shift and change with the light and how they make you feel.

A few subtle touches

If you’re just looking to add a few touches, consider whether a rug, lampshade, piece of artwork or selection of throws and cushions could work in the room and why not challenge yourself to be a little bolder with your choice of tone and with the colour combinations that you choose.

And, of course, if you find yourself feeling a little overwhelmed by the options, please do contact the studio to make an appointment at the studio and we’d be delighted to help.
